The persistence of virtually all living organisms on Earth depends on the presence or absence of other living organisms and their evolving environments. This observation has established a rich research program in understanding multispecies dynamics. Yet, these multispecies systems exhibit complex behavior, limiting our understanding of how species persistence depends on the interconnection between the many internal and external factors acting on these systems. In this talk, I will explain a theoretical approach that can help us to systematically analyze multispecies dynamics under changing environments. I will also illustrate this systems perspective with experimental data on microbial systems.
