Ethomics 2012

International Symposium "Ethomics: Asking the Organism in the Genomics Era"

Date: October 3-5, 2012

Venues: Best Western Hotel Jena, Abbe-Zentrum Beutenberg, MPI for Chemical Ecology

The symposium entitles a new term: Ethomics − a word composed of Ethology and Genomics which refers to a recent biological discipline. For the first time, we will try to bring together the research fields of ethology and genomics that have unfortunately developed into two widely separated areas in order to better understand the interplay of living organisms in ecosystems.

It is not just the organisms’ biochemical and physiological performance − and thus the associated biogeochemical cycles − that constitutes a habitat, but also their behavior. Chemical, acoustic, visual, and other signals trigger intra- and interspecific interactions which make up a given ecosystem and promote the evolution of species. The functioning of an organism including metabolic as well as behavioral factors is encoded in its genes which are passed from generation to generation.

Asking the Organism in the Genomics Era describes our new discipline of Ethomics which aims to find and define gene functions not just by analyzing molecular data volumes using model systems and computers, but also by reviving the art of natural history observation.
