Summary

A lot of advances in the understanding of how cells, tissues, organs and organisms operate is derived from data obtained with next generation sequencing approaches. These data can serve as a basis for both broader eco-evolutionary studies, just as well as molecular and biochemical studies of specific pathways or molecules.

  • How do you go about sequencing and assembling a genome or a metagenome?
  • What type of comparisons can you make across organisms with different ecological/evolutionary backgrounds and what do you infer from that?
  • How could you get information on gene expression at the cellular, organ or organismal level? What if you're interested in multiple organisms?
  • What can you do to integrate the information obtained at different omics levels? What can this tell you about their physiology and interactions?

Based on these questions, this workshop will introduce currently used genome and RNA sequencing techniques, as well as emerging methods and applications using real life examples.

Each session will start with a talk followed by a short question session and a break after which there will be a longer session in which participants can discuss potential applications of the day's subjects to their own project.
The goal is that participants get an overview of the techniques used for both genome and RNA sequencing as well their applications and reflect on how these could be/are used to further their own projects.
