Lukas Ernst receives prestigious Rottendorf Pharmacy Award

Postdoctoral researcher honored for breakthrough research on plant-based medicines

November 03, 2025

Dr. Lukas Ernst, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biochemistry, has been honored with the national Rottendorf Science Award for his groundbreaking work in pharmaceutical research. The award, presented at the House of Science in Braunschweig and endowed with 10,000 euros, recognizes the outstanding achievements of young scientists.

Dr. Ernst was recognized for his doctoral research on the biosynthesis of complex medicinal compounds in St. John’s wort, which is known for its antidepressant properties. His work identified key enzymatic reactions responsible for the plant’s chemical diversity. This research could pave the way for the sustainable production of natural drugs by reconstructing these pathways in microorganisms.

Every two years, the Rottendorf Foundation awards one German and one international scientist, with this year’s European prize going to Dr. Lennart Brewitz from the University of Oxford.
