The Department of Natural Product Biosynthesis at the Max Planck Institute of Chemical Ecology under Professor Sarah O’Connor studies the biosynthesis of secondary or specialized metabolites, compounds that are produced by plants and microbes in an enormous variety. These compounds play varied and rich roles in the environment. Moreover, many of these compounds have life-saving properties and are used in both traditional and modern medicine. In this department, we are developing approaches to elucidate and engineer specialized plant metabolism to understand the fundamental chemical, biological and evolutionary processes that underlie the biosynthesis of these complex molecules. We use robust analytical chemistry analyses to perform this work. LC-MS and GC-MS are integral parts of our research.
a highly motivated, enthusiastic and engaged technician who will assist in running our mass spectrometry platform. The candidate will be responsible for helping to maintain the instruments, to train users, and to develop methods and to analyze data. We are looking for someone with passion for the research that we do and with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced research environment. We ask for flexibility and excellent oral communication skills.
- Successful completion of BS or MS level in a mass spectrometry related field
- Experience with common data analysis software packages for GC and LC MS
- Willingness to perform basic instrument maintenance
- Knowledge in developing separation methods on both GC and LC
- Knowledge in routine maintenance and troubleshooting of a variety of MS systems
- Collaboration with department members to develop methods for data runs and analyses
- Contribute to the running and organization of the platform
- Experience in metabolomics would be an advantage
- Experience in training users on a variety of instruments
- Willingness to learn about natural product research ongoing in the department
- Good knowledge of English with strong oral communication skills
- High quality standards and attention to detail
