Land-living hermit crabs show a characteristic so called “flicking” of their antennules when an odor of interest reaches their chemosensitive tissues. Their sense of smell is sensitive enough to locate food sources and conspecifics covering even high distances. Based on the molecular data of insect olfaction and known behavior and morphology in crustaceans I investigate the molecular biology of odor perception in hermit crabs. Therefore I analyze and compare the antennal transcriptomes of aquatic and land-living species to comprehend the mechanism and evolution of their sense of smell.
