Current Research:

Successful attack of the European bark beetle (Ips typographus) on Norway spruce, Picea abies L. (Karst.) is mediated by a microbial associate, the blue stain fungus (Ceratocystis polonica), which is transmitted to the tree by the beetle. During infection and colonization by C. polonica, cytological, metabolic and molecular changes in the bark and wood occur that are frequently considered to be defensive responses to the fungus. The objective of my research is to investigate the changes occurring in Norway spruce phenolic chemistry during C. polonica infection, with special emphasis on stilbene glycoside, lignan and proanthocyanidin formation and breakdown. I am also particularly interested in the detoxification of these compounds by C. polonica.
