Director

Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology

The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology invites applications from outstanding scientists for the position of Director.

A Max Planck Director pursues a bold long-term research agenda in his or her own Department, and leads the Institute jointly with fellow Directors. Applicants should have achieved internationally-recognized distinction in some area of chemical ecology: the study of ecological interactions mediated by chemical signals among all forms of life.  Research should have a strong chemical focus and complement the wide-ranging interests of the Institute, which include interactions among bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals; in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; encompassing symbioses, competition, herbivory, predation, and pathogenesis;  using chemical, biochemical, genetic, physiological, behavioral, and ecological approaches.

Chief criteria for a directorship are scientific and scholarly excellence and an innovative and unique research program, rather than seniority or publication rankings.

We are looking for the strongest and most creative scientists worldwide, and offer an excellent international research environment, outstanding infrastructure, and long-term scientific funding.

Applications in PDF format due by 15 February 2018 must consist of a letter of intent, a curriculum vitae, a publication list, reprints of three to five selected publications, a concept statement outlining the structure and long-term, visionary research agenda of the proposed Department, and names of three referees.  Preliminary inquiries and applications should be sent to the address below, and will be held in strictest confidence.

Short-listed applicants will participate in a search symposium in Jena in the Spring of 2018

The Max-Planck-Society strives for gender equity and welcomes applications from all backgrounds.  We actively encourage applications from persons with disabilities.
