This course introduces fundamental concepts in ecology and evolution with a strong focus on microbes and interactions mediated by chemical means.

 

2) Block course: Experimental and theoretical tools to understand ecological interactions within microbial communities

Targeting graduating students of the Jena School of Microbial Communication (JSMC) and the Internaational Max Planck Research Scool (IMPRS)

Co-organized with Prof. Dr. Stefan Schuster (Friedrich-Schiller University Jena, Department of Bioinformatics).

This course aims at providing insight into the fundamental ecological and evolutionary concepts of intra- and interspecific interactions and introduces theoretical modelling as a tool to formalize ecological interactions and predict their evolutionary outcome. These topics will be covered in lectures, literature discussion groups, playing of game-theoretical games, as well as in practical computer exercises.
