Head of Mass Spectrometry (f/m/d)

The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology invites applications for

a Head of the Mass Spectrometry and Metabolomics Core Facility (f/m/d).

The Core Facility supports scientists with state-of-the-art quantitative and discovery metabolomics technologies with a focus on targeted and untargeted analyses for small molecules.

We are seeking a highly motivated, collaborative and service-oriented team leader with several years of experience in mass spectrometry and metabolomics.

The main responsibilities of the successful candidate are:

  • Manage the day-to-day work of the facility and the execution of the users’ projects, including the implementation of new approaches, techniques and work flows for mass spectrometry, and perform basic service and maintenance on the instruments.
  • Advise the customers of the facility on technical aspects, including project design, sample preparation, statistical processing, and structural interpretation; run and analyze samples in collaboration with other Departments and groups of the institute.
  • Monitor important new hardware and software technologies in the metabolomics field, and evaluate their potential implementation at the facility in accordance with the needs of research groups.
  • Develop new research methodologies, especially for small molecule analysis, with the aim of implementing new approaches, techniques and work flows for mass spectrometry
  • Organize courses at the postgraduate level to share the knowledge of metabolomics with graduate students and postdocs.

Candidates must have a university degree (Master, Diploma or equivalent) and PhD in life sciences, excellent knowledge and professional experience in the field of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, especially in small molecule analysis, as well as profound expertise in data analysis, the ability to perform basic service/maintenance of facility instruments, and a strong interest in establishing collaborative projects and cooperation with scientists from different disciplines. Excellent communication, leadership and organizational skills as well as proficiency in English are also required.

The full-time position is available from September 1, 2021, and will be offered initially for 2 years, with the expectation of permanent employment. The payment level is based on the German state public service salary scale (TVöD-Bund) according to the training, qualifications and professional experience. The social benefits correspond to the regulations of the public service.
