Research Technician/Lab Manager
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of part-time Research Technician/Lab Manager in the Predators and Toxic Prey Research Group at the Max Planck Institute of Chemical Ecology, located in Jena, Germany. The group is led by Dr. Hannah Rowland.

The goal of Dr. Rowland’s research is to study the evolution of adaptations in predators for sensing and consuming aposematic prey. The Predators and Toxic Prey Research Group use molecular techniques and bioinformatics to investigate the molecular adaptations that underlie predators’ behaviour. Behavioural responses are studied in the field and in laboratory bioassays. We are an interdisciplinary, international, and well-funded research group working to establish in vitro assays to investigate the perception of and resistance to aposematic prey defences. We work in a dynamic and international research community in Jena.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day managerial duties of the lab. They will provide administrative and logistical support to the ongoing research in the lab. The duties will include preparing standard laboratory solutions, preparing media, and maintaining chemical stocks; autoclaving, disposing of waste, providing support for insect husbandry; maintaining sufficient inventory of consumables and equipment; order, receive, and keep inventory of the same; and other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience
Master’s degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology or a related field, or Biologielaborant/in (or equivalent) with several years of work experience. Highly organised, detail-orientated, and skilled with computers. Good written and verbal communications skills. The working language of the group is English.

The remuneration is paid according to the collective agreement of the public service TVöD according to the qualification and the activity to be transferred. Key duties and responsibilities

Management and organisation  

  • Providing a laboratory managerial service to this group.
  • General lab organisation (ordering, stocks of consumables and material, coordination of technical activities)
  • Organising and documenting the work-flow from receiving samples, sending the prepared DNA/plasmids to external providers and archiving.
  • Maintenance and management of data storage and backup.
  • Autoclaving, disposal of chemical waste, making solutions and media, etc.

Maintenance and training    

  • Responsible for cleanliness, and relevant safety issues.


Person Profile

Essential knowledge, skills and experience required for the role
Education & qualifications    

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology or a related field. Or professional training as technical assistant (BTA with state accreditation (staatlicher Anerkennung), BioTA, CTA, MTA), or an equivalent qualification, and with at least 2 years of recent experience in a BSL1 molecular biology lab.

Specialist knowledge & skills    

  • Laboratory experience, preferably in the biological sciences, of preparing solutions, making media. Experience with biological samples extractions from tissue/faeces/blood (isolation of high quality RNA/DNA), and molecular cloning desirable.Willingness to learn essential.

Interpersonal & communication skills    

  • We are looking for candidates who are pro-active, responsible and reliable, with good time management and the ability to work in a team. Good communication skills to enable explanation of technical issues and processes and efficient resolution of other general laboratory and research related issues.
  • Openness and interest in learning new techniques, ability to multi-task.
  • Proficiency in English absolutely required. Proficiency in German desirable. The working language of the group is English.
